heavy hands 02:36
my heavy hands, pulling shapes from the air some survive that broken skyline, i walked for miles and i’ll never be there again from glassy water to waves pulled by the moon i can see you through the cloudy darkness branches bend, reaching low with heavy hands, summer rain creatures swim in the sky above they’ve lived through more than i’ll see we kissed under a broken streetlight you smiled in the strange electric haze i’ll take you back, under the moon in the lookout in the rain there’s nothing left, there’s no purpose but we’ll find what we need we wandered recklessly on these old roads i carelessly held you so closely
2.
when you told me you’d miss me as sure as the sky is grey, you do i remember dismissing the future approaching uncertainty as recklessly as always i’ll be there soon out there with you we’ll talk awkwardly, i’m sure catching up after weird endless months disorienting, how did the future get here? when you told me you’d find me as sure as the day is here, you did you spoke of numbers, a path to the future approaching uncertainty as recklessly as me approaching uncertainty as recklessly as me
3.
there’s only one road into your town i couldn’t handle that, i’d need some way out not traveling much but not for long we’ll get it together, find a road to get on i’ve heard these tales of times that have passed i’ve seen the old world, the ghosts of what you had went on forever, then forever finally ended things got harder even if no one meant it the wind whips through, fighting with the trees the road crumbles, gives way beneath our feet i’ll ride with this caravan, i’ll be someone who stays i’ll believe it all and earn my place
4.
imposter 02:51
snowing in april, the cold is holding on couldn’t tell you what day it is i’m in no rush to get out there we’ve made it through the worst of this and our lost year gets farther away every day tending a garden, at least i’m trying i’ll see what lives and what grows learning in pieces and always assuming i’m catching up with what everyone knows and i lost time but found a little today don’t blame the sun for hiding away or the clouds for taking up space i’ll find meaning if i travel far enough hold the stars, get back to the same place and i’ll make up for it all someday
5.
a long way 03:54
i’ll take the messiness of this over the certainty i longed for by the light of a day barely starting this isn’t everything but something more always worried about the future, present, past worried now and that’s all right by the grace of the road you’re traveling i’ll meet you between yours and mine some days sway with the heaviness of it all even though we tread so lightly if i don’t see you, tell me if you got this it’s a long way to your eyes by the light of a city in distress i hope you make it out, make it out in time
6.
i took the path that you told me to lit the way with the evening sun felt my feet push with every step where the stones sink in the mud i asked every living creature i met do you know where i should go? somewhere between every place i’ve been and the walls that were your home guess i know you in a way soundless waves and desert pines ran through the nighttime searching in vain for the morning light and i know you’re waiting by those giant rocks, the quiet sea i collected every page you wrote and burned your words to keep warm fought my way through the coldest, darkest night and still came back for more and i know you’re waiting by those giant rocks, the quiet sea
7.
thin air 02:52
spent ten years thinking caught up searching for the right words dictionaries keep changing i’m writing all my letters again learning your language hear you talking ‘bout your day while the earth keeps tumbling we’re taking our sweet time i get lost between the seasons like i’m breathing in thin air never saw you leaving know i’ll see you somewhere all this time spent being sure i know nothing is close to answered though my ink is running dry i’m writing all my letters again i get lost between the seasons like i’m breathing in thin air never saw you leaving know i’ll see you somewhere
8.
made up my mind to be on time for you i want to give more of what you need taking chances, i’m saving my dances, you know i’ve never been one to lead in the longest night, i’ll get it right again these tests weren’t made for people like me feel it in the wind, your body spins in time like the whole world is dancing free saw you leave, the way you held back saw the way the light hit your eyes i walk your street and every tree it reaches with its long and lonely arms at your doorstep, with all that’s left i’m holding we’ll keep each other from all harm
9.
will you wait for me you know i don’t like going here alone don’t look friendly, i feel guilty one step or two from a major faux pas still not used to wearing glasses and i’m sure that it shows what do i do with my hands like i’m back at the state fair melodramas oh, oh, uh oh oh, oh, uh oh i still read so slowly takes so long to get lost in my head but i daydream with no problem like i’m living the sleepiest life will you wait for me you know i’m easily distracted what do i do with all this one step or two from one step or two from a long time oh, oh, uh oh oh, oh, uh oh one step or two from one step or two from a long time
10.
summer haze 03:57
trying to look in your direction i can see where you’re going i can see the path you follow will you turn back, glance at me hope you know i’m here i’m not lost but moving slow used to see monsters, now i hear them in the night i saw the twisted ones they looked a lot like me in summer haze, in a winter’s fever used to know my ghosts now my ghosts are memories the ground it creaks, breathes under my feet i’m walking softly quietly calling for you the brightness of day, the darkness of space we’re here together for whatever makes it true

about

We created these 10 songs about the search for purpose in the midst of uncertainty after wrapping up our weekly song project. It’s about struggling with imposter syndrome, finding hope in the face of global turmoil, the evolution of language, love, and the truth that comes from fiction, including Emily St. John Mandel’s novel Station Eleven and Miranda July’s film Kajillionaire.

Like our other albums, we recorded what lives and what grows long-distance, with Zach writing songs and sending vocal, guitar, mandolin, and harmonica tracks to Amanda to finish arrangements with vocals, electro beats, keyboards, electric guitar, bass, and clarinet. Sam Greene joins us for six songs on drums and contributes keyboards and production.
